Diaper-Free Journey Wk 7

Elimination Communication – Week 7

It had been 7 weeks since I started EC with Darius. His signs are established now and we would mostly miss them only when we are busy and he did not want to communicate. Feeding misses are still tough to tackle but I expect he would learn to hold it as he gets older.

From this week onwards, I would just do summaries.

Week 7 ECing

  • Signal his need to pee by suddenly giving a small cry or urgent cry ‘hur hur’ like breathless, in the middle of an activity.
  • Still pees during feed despite already peeed just before.
  • Still misses during some naps but he’s mostly dry.
  • I wrapped him in a nappy cloth with a training pants or diaper cover on when I go out with him for a short walk.
  • He is in disposable when out for a long trip.
  • We put him in disposable diaper at night.
  • He wakes up during night time with a cry to signal his need to pee. During the wee hours, he pees into his disposable diaper but will cry a little so I have to change him.
  • Day 37- 28th Jan 09 Mon

Went for his immunisation and asked the doc about his diarrhoea. The doc said, once he’s down with diarrhoea, it’d take a while before his stools become nice again. So we have to keep feeding him the sachet of good bacteria until this subsides. It does not mean he’s still having the bacteria that caused his diarrhoea. It just means that the stools need time to go back to forming well.

    Day 39- 30th Jan 09 Fri

I started feeding him porridge today again since the GP gave the go-ahead. He pooped early in the morning but still pooped again in the evening during a milk feed. This time it was not longer wet but more of green pasty so I guess his stomach is getting back to normal.

After he goes out and come back with a wet diaper after about one and 10mins, he still pees the moment I opened the diaper cover.

    Day 40- 31st Jan 09 Sat
I noticed that after his porridge feed, he will pee more often with intervals of about 10-20mins. I think it is due to the water content of the porridge and that fact that I give him some plain water and milk too after eating.

    Day 42- 03 Feb 09 Tue

Today he didn’t pooped in the morning so I tried to potty him but he refused. The moment I say, ‘hmmm…hmmm’ or ‘engg..’, he cries very loudly as if in pain. Then, I’ll continue with singing some songs then try again saying ‘hmm…’. He will start crying the moment he hears it. This shows that he knows that I want him to poop and he couldn’t? Does he really know already?

Then, I thought he might be tired so brought him to room for nap and this time, he was still protesting very angrily. I smell something and realised that he has pooped in his nappy cloth and it was a lump. Maybe he was trying to poo just now but couldn’t get it out. Hmm, how could it be hard when I have been feeding him lots of liquid? Maybe the medicine is going a bit too far.

Then, he continued crying as I put him down for further pooping. Has he finally ‘discovered’ the pooping sensation? I hope he knows so he will inform us when he needs to poop. Maybe he finally understands now about communicating poops with us.

His peeing signs are still obvious and I only missed during feeds.

He no longer signals when we go out though probably because we were ignoring him most of the time while buying things and he gave up.

Thinking whether we should put him in cloth too when out. Too much hassle?
